UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 21 mm, 4.64 g, 10 h), 'Early Group'. Imitating Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. M ANTONINVS [...] ARMENIAVS Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius to right. Rev. P M TR P X[...]III COS II Fortuna standing front, head to left, holding rudder in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. With original suspension loop attached. Some flan cracks and scratches and the reverse somewhat double struck, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

There is no direct Roman prototype for this coin, but its decent style and Latin inscription suggest that its Gothic artist had a series of official aurei at his disposal, the types of which he merged into a creation of his own.
